Linux users will be able to use IBM DB2 Express-C in the cloud without licence fees, although it remains proprietary and no source code is available.
IBM DB2 Express-C is a restricted version of IBM's DB2 database with users limited to two cores and 2GB of RAM, though there are no limits to database size or simultaneous users. It has been available for Ubuntu as a supported software package since Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS.
IBM has also completed validation for the full version of the DB2 package on the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Gerry Carr, the head of platform marketing at Canonical, told ZDNet on Tuesday that because Canonical have "worked with IBM over the [last three-fourths of a year] we've had DB2 available on the physical servers, so it made sense to make it available on the cloud."
The DB2 Express-C variant is "more useful for medium-sized businesses", and that enterprise users will want to look at investing in the enterprise variant of the software, said Carr.
